March Birthstone: Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a beautiful gemstone which is a variety of Beryl, the same base mineral which makes up emeralds. Aquamarine is often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green, with color being more intense in larger stones. Aquamarine is mined in Brazil, Nigeria, Madagascar, Pakistan and Mozambique.

Aquamarine has a rich history and folklore. During the middle ages it was believed to be an instant antidote to poisons. Romans believed that frogs carved from Aquamarine would help reconcile problems between friends, pacify enemies and make new friends. Aquamarine was also attributed with emotional healing powers able to bring marriages closer and symbolize long unity and celebrate marriages.

Aquamarine was valued by Sumerians, Hebrews and others as warriors would wear amulets of aquamarine into battle to ensure victory. Aquamarine was also used for medicinal purposes to fight infections and cure eye ailments. Aquamarine was also used as a meditation tool and thought to help one achieve inner peace.

Aquamarine jewelry can be very beautiful and the value of aquamarine can be assessed by examining its color, color saturation, clarity and cut quality. A well cut, untreated aquamarine with beautiful rich light blue color adorns our Boucheron Paris brooch and at 32.5 carats it presents a gorgeous blue hue which is accented by the platinum used to create the brooch and the 5 carats of very white and very clean diamonds.

Hardness in gemstones is measured on the Mohs scale. The scale is based on how easily or with what difficulty one mineral can be scratched by another. The Mohs scale does not progress at an even rate. Diamonds are just one number away from sapphire in the scale. Yet, it is many times harder than gems in the sapphire group. Aquamarine is rated at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale and as such it is a durable gemstone. Cleaning should be accomplished with soapy warm water and a toothbrush.
