Traditional three stone engagement rings have been around for a very long time. De Beers, the famed diamond miner and wholesaler, invented and marketed the three stone engagement ring in 2001. They in fact created the campaign which popularized the design thus creating a better market for their smaller stones to be used as side stones. Before their campaigns, small diamonds were relatively inexpensive and plentiful. After their very successful marketing small diamonds used as side stones became expensive and in high demand. They also marketed the three stone ring as an anniversary ring.
Side stones come in various shapes. The most traditional of which is the tapered baguette cut diamond. Popular side stones are half moons, straight baguette, trilliant, kite, and other specialty cuts. Aside from these, smaller stones shaped like the central stone are often used. I believe that if a three stone ring is what your palate desires then you should use side stones which enhance the center diamond by mimicking its reflective pattern. In other words, use straight baguettes for emerald cuts, and half moons for ovals or rounds and trilliants for princess cut centers. This creates a more harmonic look and I believe a more pleasant appearance.
The main theme repeats itself here as well. You are the most important judge when selecting side stones for your engagement ring as you will be the one wearing it. Do not let yourself be swayed by anyone. Most jewelers will try to sell you what they have in stock. This may be great for them, but at the end of the day you want to be happy with your choice. So, stick to your guns and get the engagement ring that what you want.
